We have been doing a "Lap Book"(a thing were you learn about a subject and use a Manila folder to put all the stuff you learned into it so it looks cool & other people can learn from it) about Freedom Quilts. Freedom Quilts are quilts that had special meaning. Some meant you must walk in a zigzag to avoid being caught like a squiggly crazy line because slaves who were heading south wouldn't be accused of running away. Some meant it was a safe place to stay. Some like the monkey wrench meant to pack up your tools-- mental, physical and real tools too. Bears paw meant head up and follow the bear's path to get north. The Star (*) is what the people against it say & the circle (0) is what I think.........
* There is are no quilts today that were from slave times that are proof.
0 Quilts were made to be used and not to be preserved.
* Some of the quilt names are too modern to have been from back then.
0 Quilt names could have been called something different.
*people talked to a lot of former slaves & none said anything about quilts.
0 Freedom Quilts could have been used in 1 route and not the others.
Well I'm not saying either one is 100% true but I just hope you learned something along the way. :)
